Monotonix: Body Language

Label: Drag City

Tel Aviv, Israel is not exactly known for their fuzzed out garage rock scene, then again if history has taught us anything it’s that location can be as influential on a band as anything else. By the sounds of Monotonix’ debut ep Body Language, it seems they’re intent on breaking out of their native Israel where shows have been routinely stopped by local authorities. Already legendary for their live shows, usually involving setting their equipment on fire, Monotronix tread the same hash-soaked path already trail blazed by the likes of Blue Cheer and Kyuss. Amid all the chaos emerges more subtle influences as well. “On the road” sounds like what might happen if Lightning Bolt and Melvins ever jammed. Elsewhere on the title track, piano and organs shine though revealing a heavy prog influence. One of the most endearing qualities of these songs is the pop hooks that many bands who drink from a similar fountain tend to lack. While not the most polished debut Body Language is a rally cry from a band on the brink of something very exciting. Highly recommended. (Christopher)
